As much as we’d all like to think that we’re training the next great athletic sensation, let’s face it – the majority of our clients are middle-aged, or older. They are not athletes. They sit at a desk for a living. And most of them just want to lose fat, get more toned, and have more energy. Oh, and they might have certain chronic conditions during that time.

But do you know how to train clients with those conditions? And not just how to avoid making it worse. But actually how to make it better. Most trainers know what needs to be done to avoid making these conditions worse. But almost no one knows how to make them better with exercise. But the medical literature is out there on how to use exercise for these conditions, in a way that works just as well as, or better than, medications (without the side effects, too). For each of the above conditions, we will talk about:

  1. The pathophysiology (in other words, what is that condition? what’s wrong in the body when a person has this?)
  2. Risk factors (what could predispose a person to that condition?)
  3. Complications of that condition (what are the consequences once a person already has that condition?)
  4. The exercise prescription for that condition (I use the word “prescription” very deliberately. When a doctor prescribes a medication, there are parameters to that prescription: name of the medication, dosage, whether it should be taken with food, or away from food, in the morning or the evening. That’s precision. But there are also parameters to exercise prescription: type – cardio, strength, or stretching; time – how long; frequency – how many times per week; intensity – how hard. Just as a doctor wouldn’t prescribe the same medication for different conditions, nor should a client do the same type of exercise for different conditions).

About the Presenter

Hiya! My name is Igor Klibanov, and I’ve been a personal trainer since 2006. Most of my clients were the average folks, who worked at a desk for a living. They didn’t want rippling abs. They didn’t want a thigh gap. They didn’t want to have a 40-inch vertical jump, or a 300 pound bench press. What they did want was:

  • Less fat
  • More muscle
  • More energy

But that’s what most of our clients want. However, I saw that a large chunk of those same clients also had some health issues, like diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. And I felt like I needed to know how to work with these folks to make these conditions better. I wasn’t satisfied with the approach that I was taught in school of just “avoid this, or it’ll make this condition worse.” I wanted to know how to make it better.

Unfortunately, there were no resources on this topic. No books written, no websites devoted to this (besides very dense, difficult, academic sites, like the American College of Sports Medicine), no DVDs or videos about these topics. There was, however, plenty of information on corrective exercise, kettlebells, TRXs, and more. But nothing about these very prevalent conditions, that were extremely top-of-mind for my clients.

All right, I figured. If no one is writing about this, I’ll have to do my own research into these conditions. And so, my research began, and what I found was astounding. The medical literature is indeed out there on these topics. And there’s a decent amount of it. And the power of laser-targeted exercise, matched to each condition is amazing! On par with, or better than medications.

So I had to get this information out there. And I did. To date, I’ve:

  • Written and published nearly 400 articles
  • Published 4 books
  • Spoken at the Can-Fit-Pro conference in 2013, 2015, and 2018
  • Spoken at the CPTN conference in 2014 and 2016
  • Been selected as one of the top 5 personal trainers in Toronto by the Metro News newspaper
