In a Desk Job? How Should You Eat and Exercise?
The truth is that most of us are in a desk job (unless we have really cool jobs, like personal training or public speaking J). And desk jobs, while they may be great for our bank accounts aren’t doing our health and fitness any favours.
And I know what you’re thinking “but I exercise for an hour 4-6 days per week.” Certainly that’s great, and I encourage you to keep doing that. However, even an hour per day of exercise doesn’t offset 15 hours a day of sitting on your butt. Sorry.

So what do you do?
While we can certainly suggest fancy ergonomic devices, when we go in to offices for ergonomic assessments, the thing that gets people the best results is simply getting up and walking around every 20-30 minutes.
“But I’m too busy for that. My job is really important.” Stop ‘yer whining.
Here’s how you automatically build a short walk into your day.
First thing you do when you get to work: drink 2 glasses of water. Soon enough, you’ll feel like you have to go to the washroom. There’s your walk built right into your day. When you come back to your desk, drink another glass of water. Again, soon enough, you’ll be going to the bathroom.
Simple? You bet. But what can you expect as a result of implementing this simple strategy?
- More energy
- Less lower back pain
- Less eye strain
- Less stress
- Maybe even fat loss
Now let’s talk nutrition for a desk jockey. You know the saying “out of sight, out of mind?” Well, the opposite is true as well. If it’s in sight, it will get eaten. So if you have chocolate bars stashed in your desk, they’ll get eaten. No matter how strong your willpower is. The opposite is true as well. If you have a bowl full of veggies within arms’ reach at all times, they’ll get eaten too, and you don’t have to pay attention to it.
This simple strategy alone has been responsible for the loss of dozens of pounds for our clients. And, constantly snacking on veggies throughout the day makes it that much easier to resist (or at the very least, moderate) surprise office parties, when that pizza or that birthday cake just assaults you and shoves itself down your throat (you know you’ve been a victim of this).
Short Summary
- Exercising at the gym, while good, doesn’t offset the rest of your day if you’re sedentary
- At work, get up and walk around every 20-30 minutes.
- First thing you should do when you get to work: drink 2 glasses of water. This will force you to have to go to the washroom.
- Keep a bowl full of vegetables within arms’ reach at all times.
