Are Your Medications Making You Fat?

A very important question I always ask clients during their personalized Dream Body MAP Session is what medications they are taking. Different medications have different effects, and while I’m not a doctor or a pharmacist, with experience I have realized which medications can make fat loss difficult or damn near impossible.

Prednisone

Prednisone is a synthetic form of the hormone cortisol. It’s given as an anti-inflammatory, and makes people gain fat especially around the belly. It makes fat loss difficult, but it can still be done.

Birth control

The birth control pill is better than it used to be. It wasn’t uncommon for women to gain 30 or more pounds when they went on the birth control pill. Nowadays, things are better, and my clients who are on the pill gain only 2-6 pounds.

The weight is especially gained in the backs of the arms, fronts of the thighs and hamstrings.

Fat can still be lost to a certain extent, but you’ll eventually hit a wall, and your triceps, and thighs will still have excess body fat when the rest of you is pretty slim.

I find that when clients switch to a non-hormonal IUD (intrauterine device), fat loss becomes much easier, and problem spots are not as problematic anymore.

Psychological medications

I saved the best for last: psychological medications. These include anti-psychotics, anti-anxiety and anti-depression. I don’t know why, but for whatever reason, people on these drugs just don’t lose body fat no matter how good their exercise and nutrition. That’s why if somebody has fat loss as their primary goal, unless they are working with their doctor or another practitioner to get off those medications, we won’t even take them on as clients. Of course, exercise and proper nutrition is still beneficial for those people, independent of their fat loss effects.

There are likely other medications that cause fat gain or make fat loss very difficult, but as I mentioned earlier, I am neither a doctor nor a pharmacist. But if you are actively seeking to get healthier and fitter and you’re taking these mentioned medications, I recommend speaking to a qualified practitioner. The one I refer all of my clients to is Dr. John Dempster from the Dempster clinic. If you’d like his help, give him a call at 416-551-9577. In case you’re wondering, no, I don’t get referral commissions.
