Last week, I went to a seminar about the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer\’s disease. It was give by Dr. Rahim Habib, ND. I learned lots of new things, and I\’m passing my notes on to you.
Here they are:
- Beta amyloids (AKA plaques) are deposited in the brain
- In people with Alzheimer’s disease, there’s a problem with fat metabolism in the brain
- The substance responsible for breaking down cholesterol is either malfunctioning or deficient
- More free radicals are produced with Alzheimer’s disease, so antioxidants help. Especially vitamin E.
- There are 8 different forms of vitamin E, and a balance of them is best. Taking a form of vitamin E that you already have sufficient amounts of will not do any good, and may actually cause harm.
- Get tested for vitamin E to figure out if you’re deficient or not, and if you are, in which form of vitamin E.
- Toxicity is related to Alzheimer’s disease.
- Aluminum toxicity is a risk factor, but not for everyone.
- Blood levels of mercury don’t correlate to levels in the brain. Research was done on people who died from Alzheimer’s disease. Their blood was taken just before they died to evaluate for levels of mercury. After their death, researchers analyzed the brain directly for mercury, and the two values were quite different.
- Although there is no direct measurement for brain levels of heavy metals, a more accurate measurement than blood is hair mineral analysis.
- Too much insulin can increase plaques in the brain
- Too much cortisol (the stress hormone) breaks down the blood brain barrier (BBB).
- The BBB prevents certain chemicals from going into the brain, and allows others to get in.
- Curcumin (a component of turmeric) increases plaque breakdown in the brain, and can have very good effects on people with Alzheimer’s disease.
- Vitamin D has neurodevelopmental effects
